Building Health, Knowledge, and Dignity for Women

Mwandamo’s last outreach to Oltukai was at the end of July and builds on a long-time close relationship we have with the Oltukai community. It was a day of reinforcing partnership, learning together and excitement at the seeds of growth happening in women’s health in this rural community.

Together with Government officials, we visited the site where a maternity unit and laboratory for women are to be developed—an important step toward bringing essential maternal and reproductive health services closer to the women and families of Oltukai.

Beyond the construction site, the heart of our visit was the women themselves. We are always welcomed by the women here with song and dance and a feeling of celebration. We are so grateful to be back! We gathered a circle of women for an open and practical session on menstrual hygiene management, creating a safe space to share knowledge, ask questions, and learn from one another.

The session went beyond conversation. We had a practical demonstration on how to properly wash, care for, and maintain reusable menstrual pads, helping them confidently use reusable menstrual products safely and hygienically.

As part of the outreach, we also distributed menstrual cups, giving women another sustainable menstrual hygiene option and an opportunity to better understand and take ownership of their menstrual health.

What made the day especially beautiful was seeing different efforts come together—Government leadership, community participation, health education, and practical support—all with one shared purpose: to help women live healthier, more informed, and more dignified lives.

This visit to Oltukai reminded us that meaningful change is built in many ways: sometimes with bricks and a laboratory, sometimes with a simple menstrual hygiene lesson, and sometimes by creating a safe circle where women feel heard and empowered.

We leave Oltukai with hope—not only for a maternity unit and laboratory that will soon serve women, but for a community where every woman can access knowledge, care, dignity, and the confidence to make informed choices about her health.
